No one knows where cabbage salad comes from, but when spring comes, cabbage salad plays an important role in every Vietnamese meal. Among luxurious dishes like fried or stir-fried ones,a plate of cabbage salad can balance all senses, making diners not feel greasy or be fed up by eating too many fatty dishes.

Making cabbage salad is not difficult, it requires very simple ingredients such as cabbage, carrots, celery. Which you can easily find in any supermarket or market. And, laksa leaves, which is an indispensable ingredient in most noodle soup and Pho, is now used for the salad plate, making the dish more attractive. And the most important ingredient is sour salt water, which decide whether your dish will be successful or not.

Ingredients for Vietnamese cabbage salad

  • 1/2 cabbage = 350 gr
  • 2 carrots
  • 4 chunks of celery
  • 1 piece of ginger
  • 1 tablespoon of salt
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1 bunch of laksa leaves
  • 1 chili pepper
  • 700ml water, 25gr salt, 40g sugar, 25ml vinegar

How to cook Vietnamese cabbage salad

Pour 700ml water, 25gr salt, 40g sugar, 25ml vinegar into the pot and dissolve, cook on medium heat, when the sugar is dissolved, turn off the cooker. (the mixed water needs to be warm when processing this dish).

Slice cabbage. Peel off and grate carrots. Slice or grate the celery. Pick fresh laska leaves and slice it. Shred ginger. Slice chili pepper.

Add cabbage, carrots and celery in a large bowl with salt and sugar and mix them and wait for 20-25 minutes. Then rinse in cold water 2-3 times. Finally squeeze it to remove water.

Add cabbage, carrot and celery in a bowl, then mix with ginger and coriander. Put this mixture in a sterilized food container, pour warm salt and sugar water. The water needs to cover the vegetables, leave 4-5 hours in the refrigerator.
